Storm damage callouts spike the week after the first big summer cell rolls through. Almost every one of them starts with something small that was visible months earlier.
Clear your gutters and valleys. Leaf build-up in a valley will back water up under the sheeting or tiles long before the gutter itself overflows.
Check your downpipes actually discharge away from the house. Blocked or disconnected downpipes push water into the eaves and, eventually, into the wall cavity.
Look for lifted or slipped tiles, loose ridge capping and rusted screws or fasteners. Any of these will let wind-driven rain through.
Finally, look inside. Ceiling stains, musty smells in the roof space and flaking cornice paint are all early signs of a leak that has not shown itself yet.
